Ghee Per Litre vs Per Kg: Understanding Weight and Volume
Ghee is sold either by volume in litres or by weight in kilograms because liquid fats and solid fats occupy different amounts of space depending on their temperature. When you walk into an Indian grocery shop or browse online for traditional A2 Gir cow ghee crafted by the bilona method, you will notice that some jars list net volume while others list net weight. Understanding why this happens helps you compare prices accurately and know exactly how much nourishment you are taking home for your daily dal, roti, and traditional Indian home cooking.
Why Is Ghee Sold in Both Litres and Kilograms?
Ghee is sold in both units because different producers follow different packaging regulations and trade traditions. Large commercial brands often bottle their ghee by volume using automated liquid-filling machines, measuring it in litres or millilitres. Small-batch artisans and traditional dairy farms often pack their bilona ghee by weight on a weighing scale, measuring it in grams or kilograms. Because pure fat changes physical states between a warm liquid and a cool, grainy solid, sellers choose the unit that best fits their packaging equipment and local market standards.
Our cows are not use and throw
A cow that stops giving milk is still our cow. She stays on the farm, with the same feed, the same shed and the same medical care she had when she was milking. We do not sell her on and we do not let her go. That is the whole basis of the ghee we make — you cannot ask an animal for her milk and then abandon her for it.
Our mission goes further than our own herd. There are cows on the street who are injured every day, who eat plastic, who cry through the night with nobody coming. We want to take them in. The plan is a chain of Organic Farmz gaushalas in several places, so that help is not one shed in one city but something a hurt animal can actually reach.
This takes more than we can carry alone — land, fodder, vets, hands. Come and join our initiative. Anything you give goes to feed, treat and shelter these cows.

Is One Litre of Ghee Heavier Than One Kilogram?
One litre of ghee is actually lighter than one kilogram because pure milk fat has a density of approximately 0.9 grams per millilitre at room temperature. This means that a one-litre jar of ghee contains roughly 900 grams of product by weight, even though it takes up one litre of space in the glass jar or tin. If you compare a one-litre jar directly against a one-kilogram jar without checking the unit, you might assume you are getting an equal quantity when you are actually receiving about ten percent less product by weight in the litre container.
| Unit of Measurement | Approximate Mass | Physical State Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Litre of Ghee | ~900 Grams | Measured by volume, takes up 1000 ml of space |
| 1 Kilogram of Ghee | 1000 Grams | Measured by weight on a scale, contains a full kilo of fat |
How Do Temperature and Danedaar Texture Affect Volume?
Temperature changes the volume of ghee significantly because fats expand when warm and contract when cool. A jar of A2 Gir cow ghee kept in a warm summer kitchen will melt completely into a clear golden liquid, taking up more space in the jar. When winter arrives, that same quantity of bilona ghee solidifies into a rich, grainy, danedaar texture that occupies less physical volume. Because the volume fluctuates with the weather while the mass in grams remains constant, selling or buying by weight provides a truer measure of what you are paying for.
How Should You Compare Two Different Ghee Jars?
You should compare two different ghee jars by converting both prices to a standard cost per 100 grams rather than looking at the headline price per jar, litre, or kilo. If Jar A holds 500 millilitres and Jar B holds 500 grams, Jar B actually contains slightly more physical fat because 500 ml of ghee weighs roughly 450 grams. By calculating the price per gram or per 100 grams, you can easily evaluate the value of artisan bilona ghee made from indigenous cow milk against mass-produced alternatives.
